Essential Tower Inspection Services for Safe Telecommunications

Learn why regular tower inspections are critical for safety and compliance, and what to expect from a professional tower inspection service.

Telecommunications towers are critical infrastructure — and they operate in some of the harshest environments imaginable. Regular inspection isn't just a compliance checkbox; it's the difference between a tower that performs reliably for decades and one that becomes a safety hazard.

Why Tower Inspections Matter

A single missed structural deficiency can result in tower failure, costly emergency repairs, regulatory violations, or — worst case — a workplace fatality. OSHA, TIA-222, and carrier lease agreements all mandate regular inspection programs for good reason.

What a Professional Tower Inspection Covers

A comprehensive tower inspection by Richesin Engineering includes:

  • Visual inspection of all structural members, connections, and welds
  • Grounding and bonding continuity verification
  • Antenna and cable condition assessment
  • Tower light functionality (FAA compliance)
  • Corrosion and paint condition evaluation
  • Guy wire tension measurement (guyed towers)
  • Foundation condition observation

Drone vs. Climbing Inspection

Modern drone inspection technology delivers superior photo documentation at significantly lower cost and risk compared to climbing-based inspection. Our FAA Part 107 pilots capture high-resolution imagery of every structural element — including angles that would be difficult to photograph from a climbing position.

That said, some deficiencies require a hands-on assessment that only a trained tower climber can perform. The best inspection programs combine both approaches.

Inspection Frequency

TIA-222 recommends formal structural inspections every 3-5 years, with annual visual inspections in between. High-wind and high-ice loading areas should inspect more frequently. After major weather events, an emergency inspection may be warranted.
